This is a portrait of Sam, a dog I haven’t met (yet). This often happens in animal portraiture. Sometimes it’s due to the location of the subject, other times because the animal is sadly no longer with us. In those situations I have no choice but to work from photographs. It’s actually easier on the animal working from a photo because they hate to pose, but it’s nice to meet them to get a sense of their personality. By doing this the portrait becomes more than just “my” interpretation gathered from a photo.

Thank you for the comment and also for visiting my blog. I enjoyed your blog as well, especially the sketching lesson. In addition to drawing from an upside down photo I find putting your sketch up to a mirror helps show any areas in need of improvement. A grid also works and you’re actually doing the drawing “freehand” which is important! The initial sketch for a portrait takes the longest time and is usually the hardest to do. I look forward to seeing more of your artwork and would love to see a photo of Dixie!

Thanks for the tip! Do you mind if I add your tip to the lesson as well? 🙂
Thank you! I look forward to seeing more of yours too1 ^.^
I was just starting on her portrait actually. I’m thinking about either doing something for the upcoming horse-racing season or some pet portraits I’ve done, including Dixie’s. 🙂 She’s getting to be a big girl but she’s still got that puppy in her. 😉
Is the dog in your gravatar yours? He looks a bit like my big sister’s dog. 🙂-
You’re welcome! By all means use this tip in your lesson. I’m not sure who told me but I’ve been using that for decades. It really makes mistakes jump right out!

Thanks a bunch! I was trying it out myself yesterday (when finishing up my Golden’s portrait) and it worked great!

You can find my Golden’s portrait on my post called, “Horses, the Wild West and…A Word from a Retriever?”. 🙂

Hello
I really like your drawings! Especially Dixie’s portrait. She’s lovely and will probably be a “puppy” for years to come.-
Thank you! And believe me, she knows it too. 😉 I certainly hope so! She really does believe she’s a little dog. My little sister’s Peke-A-Poo thinks he’s a big dog.
